Tauba Auerbach returns to New Image Art for her second show, along with New York artist Nico Dios, entitled “Signs of the Real and Infinite.” Continuing her dialogue on human communication and the shortcomings inherent in language, she focuses on the function of malfunction, particularly in the context of human-constructed communication systems. With large-scale ink on paper drawings, embossed images, collages, a video, and altered simple machines such as eyeglasses and typewriters, Auerbach comments on the various languages we use to encode our world in an attempt to make sense of it. More often than not, these languages take on a life of their own and we end up at their mercy. Her focus is primarily on the written English language, but also includes numbers, mechanics, and the scientific method. |
Leah Ollman of the LA Times wrote, “Tauba Auerbach’s work has a marvelous, magical quality about it, but not puff-of-smoke, wave-of-wand, sleight-of-hand magic. Instead it enacts a more profound perceptual trick, art’s oldest ace in the hole: awakening us to the amazements of the ordinary and familiar.” Auerbach’s previous show at New Image Art will be reviewed this fall in Art in America as well. |
Making his debut at New Image Art, New York-based Nico Dios’ minimalist, technical works on paper are concerned with uniting disparate fields of the arts such as psychology, art, religion and science as they once were in history. His work represents his own personal attempt to acknowledge and practice a reunification of these deviating arts. |
